The basics

What is a reverse mortgage?

A reverse mortgage is a loan designed to allow eligible older homeowners to access part of the equity they have accumulated in their home without having to sell it. Depending on the lender and your circumstances, funds may be available as a lump sum, regular payments, a line of credit, or a combination of these options.

Importantly, you generally continue to own and live in your home while the loan remains in place, subject to the terms and conditions of the loan.

Interest and fees are typically added to the loan balance, meaning the amount owing can increase over time. This makes understanding both the immediate benefits and the longer-term implications particularly important.

How it could help

What your home equity could do

Later life lending can provide greater financial flexibility across a range of retirement and family needs.

Improve your retirement lifestyle

Access additional funds to supplement your retirement income and provide greater flexibility for travel, experiences and everyday living.

Medical and healthcare costs

Funds for medical procedures, specialist treatment, rehabilitation, mobility equipment, in-home support and other health-related expenses.

Stay in your home for longer

Help fund home modifications, accessibility improvements, mobility equipment, maintenance or additional in-home care and support.

Transition to supported or aged care

Additional flexibility to help meet the costs of respite care, assisted living or residential aged care, without necessarily requiring an immediate sale of the family home.

Renovate or improve your home

Fund renovations, accessibility improvements or maintenance that may help you remain comfortably and safely at home for longer.

Help your children or family

Some homeowners choose to access equity to provide an earlier inheritance or assist children with a home deposit or other significant financial needs.

For families

Helping families navigate important decisions

Later life financial decisions are often made as a family. Adult children may be helping parents understand care options, medical expenses, property decisions and how to fund the next stage of their lives.

Lydian can work with you, your family and, where appropriate, your financial adviser, accountant, solicitor or other professional advisers to help you understand the lending options available. Our role is to make the lending side of the decision clear, considered and easy to understand.

Our process

A considered approach to later life lending

01

Understand your needs

We start with a conversation about you, your family and what you are trying to achieve.

02

Explore your options

A Lydian specialist considers available lending solutions and explains how they work in straightforward language.

03

Understand the long-term impact

We help you understand the costs, risks and potential impact of the loan over time, not simply how much you can borrow today.

04

Make an informed decision

If you decide to proceed, your specialist will help manage the lending process from application through to settlement.

Your next step

Your home. Your equity. More choices for what comes next.

You may have spent decades building equity in your home. That equity may now provide greater choice, whether that is living more comfortably in retirement, staying in your home for longer, meeting healthcare costs, helping your family or funding the transition into the next stage of care.

The first step is not applying for a loan. It is understanding your options.

Talk to a later life lending specialist

Arrange an initial confidential conversation with a specialist who can help you and your family understand whether a reverse mortgage or another later life lending strategy could be appropriate.

Lending eligibility, terms, conditions, fees and charges apply. A reverse mortgage may not be suitable for everyone and can affect the equity remaining in your home and your estate. Accessing home equity may also have financial, tax, estate planning, aged care and government benefit implications. Consider obtaining independent financial, legal and other professional advice regarding your individual circumstances.
